Parent Tips
ATTENTION
PARENTS! It ALL
starts with you! We have all heard the alarming The process is as simple as Crawl, Walk, Run…..just the way life was intended to be:
CRAWL (Ages 0 to 30 Months) Begin by playing with your baby as soon as possible. Lie on the floor with them and help them develop the early motor skills needed to become stronger and more agile. Nothing serious here…just turn off the TV and play with your little guy or gal and watch them grow!
Buy a Baby Jogger or Bike Trailer and USE IT! Does it cost money? Sure, but just skip a few of those fast food meals and it will quickly pay for itself! When weather permits, begin taking your baby for walks, jogs or bike rides. There is a Double Benefit…for your baby and you!! Simply by exposing your baby to this activity, he or she will soon recognize the pattern of playing, walking, jogging, etc. and will look forward to these special times. You will also recognize the new pattern in your life, and like your baby, will also look forward to each upcoming activity!
WALK (Ages 30 Months to 5 Years) As your child’s motor skills develop and they become a little more independent, it will be time to go to the next level with them. Here, the options are endless: walking, biking, roller blading, swimming, gymnastics, stretching and more and more and more! These are some of the best years with your child…watching them grow and develop! Be there with them as they do, and you will develop a bond that is inseparable!
RUN (Ages 4 and Beyond…..) Your children have now become just a little more independent (perhaps too much so), and they want more. Encourage their participation in individual or group athletic activities such as youth races, t-ball, swimming lessons, or dance classes. Because you started working with your child in the “CRAWL” stage above, he or she will love these activities!
Remember….do not fall into the trap of trying to live through your child and wanting them to “win” every time they do something. They have a lot of living to do yet, and this stage is all about continuing to develop. Reality is that your child will probably not become a Professional Athlete (don’t rule it out), so don’t expect it from him or her. You have helped your child develop an appreciation of an active lifestyle, so don’t discourage them by placing unwanted pressure on them.
Parents, it’s going to take your encouragement and support to help your child understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Start now, and they will thank you for MANY years to come! |
